Got the YLOD today. At first I thought I was fucked but thank God one of my friends happens to be a computer expert so I called him. Took a couple of hours and the thing is fixed! I was afraid I'd have to either pay the 130€ to get it fixed or buy me a new PS3 AND a PS2.

What did he do? Didn't he have to solder some parts? Unfortunately, "fixing" the ylod is never permanent.

He used a heat gun and some thermal grease. While he was at that I also cleaned the parts of dust.

I've heared it's not permanent, although I hope it doesn't happen again too soon.

the 60GB PS3 is notorious for YLOD compared to the other models. i have the 160GB very low chance to get it

I still love me some 60 gig PS3. I don't want to buy a PS2 again. At least I saved on the repair fees.

yea 60gb PS3 is still the best, also beacuse it has that nice chrome finish 4 usb slots and that spot where you can place SD memory, and 3 more slots for different cards

I'm purposely not send my 60gig back. I'm just buying a new one and keeping the 60gig for my game room when I get a house.

You know, after we ripped the thing apart and started heating it, my friend said that the thermal grease that had been originally used on the thing was rubbish. It shouldn't dry out to be the dust it was. He also said that this might be the reason for some YLODs, as it doesn't do it's job very efficiently. I'd recommend changing the thermal grease within your system if you ever get heating problems.

Your friend is right. And actually, the grease is the cause of almost every YLOD. Not just some, most.

Probably because PS3s have so much crap in them that drives the price up enough already...

Still, the grease isn't that expensive itself. It's just weird that they decided to go even cheaper with that.

It may have been a mistake. Like maybe they didn't expect it to break down like it does. Even with this, the old 60gigs are far more reliable than any 360.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. It died again. Crap...

Oh well, time to bust out my PS One!

On a brighter note, my PS3 will be here tomorrow! I got the $300 320 gig Infamous 2 bundle. I'm excited!!! You should look into this Mass. I got mine on Amazon.com.
